I’ve met so many Greek Muslim converts, I lost count! But the problem is, we are all scattered throughout the world so I’d like to keep a count of who’s out there. AND I’d like to prove to others that yes, there ARE Greek Muslims out there! We are not Turks pretending to be Greeks!!!
We really aren’t.
If you are Greek and are a Muslim, please go ahead and add a comment below, listing your first name, male or female, when you became Muslim and if you want, you can add contact information (ex. e-mail, blog, website, youtube name etc.) so we can keep in touch. Also, go ahead and join the groups for Greek Muslims on yahoo, facebook, etc. from the links section to your right.

”Assalam Aleykum to all my sisters & brothers in islam, also a biggggggggggg ”yia sas se olous aftous pou tha tihi na diavasoun to kimeno mou”. I am Muslim since 1993 & i am proud following a truthful, simple & logical religion. All my questions are answered by the most powerful book on earth that contains all that exist on earth in the universe & what ever in between!!! the Qur’an!!! I’m from a Greek island & I faced a lot of problems even a three month prison just because I was married to a Muslim! Likely, my father baled me out so no one will ever know that my father’s daughter [me!] had to go to prison, what an embarrassment for my father but alhambdoulilah for me I didn’t have to face the four walls for three months. Now I live in England with my children learning about Islam as much as we can. I am happy that I can practise my religion & also sad because I had to leave my country, Ellada!!! Especially my island, but on the other hand I know for sure that Allah will take care of me where ever I am. I wear full hijab, alhambdoulilah [thanks to Allah], I teach general knowledge about Islam to teenage girls how to be modest within the territories of Islam, knowing their writes & how to take care themselves against any difficulties that Allah will present them in their lives.
Another time insha-Allah i am going to talk about myself how i become interested in Islam & why, untill then Salam Aleykum, may Allah help & keep strong all the sisters & brothers who are working on this website & do a magnificent job!!! masha-Allah & well done!!!

Salam Alykom,
I am a Greek Muslim from Toronto Canada. I become muslim 7 years ago when i was 15. I was always so confused with what i was brought up with, so I did alittle research on world religons and came across Islam. It took my about 5 minutes to realize that I have finally found the answer to this empty feeling I have had my whole life with Religon!
I am now married with three wonderful children and I thank Allah everyday for guiding me to the right way!
If anyone out there would like to chat please e-mail me at yassy63@hotmail.com
I am a Greek Muslim from Toronto Canada, If there is anyone that would like to chat please email me at yassy63@hotmail.com!
Salam Alykom
There is somthing I was wondering, how do we raise our children differently then how were raised? Like Greek School? Is the right for our children? When I was in Greek school we had to learn about greek orthodox religion….
Wa Alaikum Assalaam Patricia!
I’m not Greek, I’m a convert to Islam, but I speak Greek and I’m teaching my children Greek. I stood on the fence with regards to this question too. Ultimately, I decided that I would send my children to Greek school, even though they tought the Orthodox faith, and that I would simply explain to my children that this is what they believe, but that we believe this, this and this. I feel that they should learn about what other people believe anyway, and that having them learn Greek will enrich their religious knowledge so much by them being able to read the New Testament in its original language, later on in life…
Dina from Ontario, CANADA
Alykom salam
It is something we all wonder about, I feel that if a child (whether greek, pakistani, french, italian) has the right grounds at home i.e the parents are teaching the children about islam properly, then technically, emphasis on technically there shouldnt be a problem. However, aside from religious instruction in a school, i believe the problem doesnt lie in teaching other religions. Knowledge is a great part of islam- and is also important for any human being for the healthy development of their mind. Once the child learns something, even if it is greek orthodox, he/she will come home and ask mommy and daddy, they taught me this at school, but we do this, and this is where a muslim parents responsibility lies.
I think that the problem is relating to peer pressure, and how other children who may be subjugated daily to THEIR parents extreme (ETHNISTIC) pressure may impact on the child. The child will have to learn to stand up for itself, just as children do in the UK (when other children at school may pull her hijab off, or mock her) , or in France (where things have gone a step further and the hijab has been banned). These are the problems i think Greek muslim children will face. Learning about other religions, and keeping our Greek heritage (which we are entitled to, because WE ARE STILL GREEKS) is not a crime. We shouldnt weaken under this social pressure, that because we are muslims, and greeks , we must be outcasts. We are in 2008 last time i checked:)
It is a hot topic. Although each one of us has our own jihad (troubles to bear).
Just as a christian greek child would be WELCOMED with open arms in a muslim greek school. So should a greek muslim child be welcomed in a christian greek school. The Greeks spoke of democracy, sometimes I wonder if it was all air.
Wa alaikum assalaam Patricia!
Welcome to the website. I’m happy to hear that you are benefiting from it. I would love to hear more about how you converted to Islam. Keep in touch.
As-salaam ‘alaykum wa rahmatullaah wa barakaatuhu brothers and sisters,
Firstly I’m not Greek, but an Ethiopian living in Toronto, Canada. However, I am very happy to see Greek Muslims, al-hamd lillaah. I love to meet Muslims from all types of backgrounds. May Allaah bless all of you and spread Islaam to your families. Aameen!
Just to add to the list though, there is a brother named Hamza Andreas Tzortis from the U.K. who gave a presentation at my University arguing for the existence of God and the truth of Islaam. As you can probably tell from the name, he is also of Greek descent. He has a blog here with a lot of beneficial material: http://hamzatzortzis.blogspot.com/ .
Ma’a Salaamah
Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatu. Welcome to the group Abu Musa!
I’m sure that presentation was great. I wish I could have attended. Thanks for the link. Please let others know about our website as well and I look forward to your future posts.

asalam wualekum! My name is Yussuf and I am a Greek Muslim. My family are all Greeks. I was born in Pyrgos Greece, there my family baptised me with the name Triantafyllos. I migrated to England at the age of 8 with my father, my mother and my three brothers, there I remained for 18 years, except when I came to do my national service in the Greek army. In England I had a lot of muslim friends. They were my friends so I wanted to know what they believe in. I started asking questions about Islam, and I was fascinated by it. One day an old man that knew the religion well opened my eyes and I realised that I was a muslim. That same day I went to the mosque and I testified that there is only one god and prophet mohamed is his last messenger. I chose the name Yussuf. Now im back in Greece and I feel so lucky that god let me be a muslim, he let the truth come in to my heart. I learned how to pray in arabic and how to perform the prayers properly. I believe that I will be a very good slave inshala. alhamdulilah! God is the greatest!!
Assalamualaikum my brother. I am a muslim from singapore and going to greece in november and will be staying in volos as my aunt (who is a free thinker now) is living there. Is there halal food in volos and athens and is there any way to buy halal meats? Pls email me at payutpenyu@hotmail.com

Assalamu ‘alaikum adhelfoi ki adhelfes!
Alhamdulillah, I’ve been a Muslim for 9 months. It’s been very nice to find other Greeks like me who have discovered Islam. I converted because of the Islamic concept of God and how we pray five times a day. All religions are a way of life for those who adhere to them, and I think Islam is the most integrated into everyday life. Prayer is simple and more meaningful to me than how I used to pray as an Orthodox Christian. What I mean as simple is that it is appropriate for all levels of dedication to Islam and can be very profound to us. I feel close to Allah where as at church I was trying to get close to Allah with icons, taking communion, trying to do daily prayers and things like that. But I still felt a hole in my heart. I just wanted to pray to God and get closer to Him. I learned about Islam in high school and college. A friend, may Allah reward him, gave me the Qur’an. It made me ask questions of my own faith. Why did the Messiah have to be divine? When an Orthodox Christian talks about God he/she can not do so without mentioning how he/she believes that God came down, became man so that we may become like God. When a scholar in Islam talks about God, Who He is, about why we should fear, love, and hope in Him, etc. I am moved. Alhamdulillah, Allah guided me to this deen.
I think we should start a discussion about being Muslims but preserving our Greek heritage. There are many things in our culture that are related to the Orthodox Church. Also, music and dance is a big part of our culture. So, I guess the question is, how much of our culture is “halal?” We aren’t scholars, but we should do our own research than share it with each other.
Wa alaikum assalaam Nikos! Congratulations on your new life direction. I think most of us can identify with your transition precisely.
I like your suggestion to start a discussion about our culture vs. Islam and how to balance it. I think I’ll start a blog post on that so please, jump in and start commenting so we can get the ball rolling!
i am a muslim too who live in greece in ksanthi. in ksanthi and komotini we are abaut 150000 people i am wery proud about us religion and im verry hapy to see that day to day the muslim from(of) greece increase my email is tsitakahmet@hotmail.com.also i speac greek and turkish very good if som body have any qustion about the islam and want to help him i will pe very hapy selamunaleykum
Assalaamu alaikum,
My father was the child of two Greek immigrants. He attended Greek school and the Greek Orthodox church, but as an adult he chose to distance himself from his Greek roots. I’m glad he married my mother, of course (she’s of German heritage), but I wish he had sent us to Greek school, at least. My mother wanted us to go, but my father didn’t.
I’ve always identified myself as a Greek, even though I haven’t been to Greece yet (or anywhere in Europe) and I can’t speak the language. I studied Koine Greek for a couple years in college so I can read it, though I’ve forgotten much I learned about the grammar.
I was born in St. Louis, the city my grandfather and his brothers chose. My husband and I are now raising our children in Kentucky.
Br. Ahmet,
It’s so nice to hear from our brothers/sisters from Xanthi/Komotini. I would love to hear more about life there so we can let others know. Also, I heard your city is a big university city… how is the situation for Greek Muslims in your part of the world?
Wa alaikum assalaam Sr. Jamilah. You made it!! We share a similiarity. Although many of the Greek kids I knew hated to go to Greek school, I really wanted to go.
Knowing Koine Greek is a great asset for dawah, ma sha Allah.
Looking forward to your future contributions to our site… everyone else, stay tuned. Sr. Jamilah is an author. 🙂

Hello to all of you,
After so long time, I was waiting to find Muslims who do not deny their Greekness but they are trying to be good Muslims and fellow Greek brothers and sisters too. Thank God I found you.
My name is Kally and I want to know about Islam in detail. I live in Greece and I would like to meet with other Muslim friends to teach me Islam in detail (theology and philosophy, economy and science) in the Greek language.
I prefer to meet Greek women because I am a woman too.
Thank you in advance
Kally
Ma sha Allah Muhammad (Humza), welcome to the group!
Hi Kally,
Thanks for posting. We are here to answer all your questions as best we can and also feel free to go through the archives on the site. Hopefully, they will answer some of your questions as well.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thank you all for the warm wellcome.
Yes, Ι do have a lot of questions about Islam and one of them is the following:
I’ ve already read the Holy Quran twice (in Greek) and I ‘ ve encountered the word
” o Νόμος της … Αντεκδικήσεως!!! “.
Είναι λοιπόν λογικό από μέρους μου να σας ερωτήσω … πως λογίζεται αυτή η έννοια κατά το Ισλάμ;
Ευχαριστώ πολύ για την βοήθειά σας και την καλοσύνη σας
Κάλλη
Kally, we’re happy to help you with any questions you may have. Can you give us the chapter and verse number you found this word, Αντεκδικήσεως, in the Qur’an so we can explain it?
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Sorry, what I mean is that it takes about 2-3 minutes or so for your blog to load (when it should take about 5 seconds or less) because of the photos or videos you have on there makes everything go very slow. It could be because the photos you have on there are way too big for the web. You can try to take out the photos or just find photos that are very small for web.
Hope that helps.

Salam Alykom everyone…Are there any greek muslims that live in the toronto area??
Κατάλαβες τι θέλω να πω; You need to look into the surrounding context of wat is being spoken about in the Quran, (although i would still prefer and require u to mention which section and passage of the Quran you found this word in), and just as the word Αντεκδικήσεως may exist (or may not, depending if you can provide the proof of it), the word Ισλαμ (means PEACE). The Prophet(saw) Mohammed never used force in his whole life, and all correct and guided muslims follow his ways of living. The only time force was used (and NOT revenge) was in self defence. And even in these situations it would be used as a last measure, after alot of negotiations and discussions with the leaders. The Prophet Mohammed(salalahu alaihi wa salam) was the perfect example of sabr (patience- υπομονή) and if u read his life story he was famous for being honest and trustworthy and a peacemaker.
Inshallah i hope that has shed some light, although please do refer to the section and part you mean, perhaps we can help you alittle better.
Fi aman allah
Mariam
Wa alaikum assalaam Eleni,
Wow! Ma sha Allah, you are our first mother and daughter to join the group. I’m so glad you can benefit from the website and I look forward to your future posts.
I have not been back to Greece since I left at age 7. I would like to know what it is like for a Greek Muslim woman who wears hijab and has her Greek name. People here think I look Turkish or Syrian. Will I encounter problems in Greece? I should explain that I was raised an Orthodox Christian and am a convert to Islam. I kept my Greek first and surname.
Eleni, I was wondering the same thing. Perhaps islamgreece, Ahmet or Mariam can give us some insight.
Patricia, you can contact Br. Humza (comment #29) to find more Muslims in Toronto. Hope that helps!
Assalam aleykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh
I’m half Greek and half Dutch, my Greek name is Sebastian George Arvanitis and my Islamic name, Amir. I embraced Islam in the summer of 2006 (at my 16s) having before, studied the most important religions a little. I started learning about Islam through paltalk where I was asking muslims about Islam because of my curiosity that arised by the things happening in the past few years. Having a little knowledge (about religions) and lean towards Islam, but being in a state of great question on the matter of religion, I decided to have my own religion with rules as I believed that God would want them for me. After a while, I realized that I was fooling myself because it could not be possible, if God existed, to know what He would want from me when religions did not, so I prayed for Him to guide me to the right path, and ended up in Islam.
I lived in Greece untill a few days ago where I moved to Netherlands where I will be studying for the following years. I am happy to see so many Greek muslims and hope for us to become even more.
Ευχαριστώ θερμά όλους και πάνω απ’ όλα Τον Θεό, που μου στάλθηκε λινκ σε αυτό το μπλογκ.
Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatu Sevastianos/Amir.
Wow, ma sha Allah, what a wonderful story and at a young age. I pray that everything goes well with you and your new move to the Netherlands.
You can join our discussions be commenting on the posts from the main site. Looking forward to it.
p.s. Since you were just in Greece, how easy/hard is it to visit Greece wearing the hijab? Eleni was asking…
Well, look, I know someone (another Eleni :P) who is greek muslimah and she has not had any problems till now. Theoretically there should be little to no reaction by the greek people. Only teens would make some jokes or something, but that is quite rare too. It seams that Greeks are quite tolerant towards the veiling, although there have not been many women with hijab to form an absolute conclusion.
I would say, try it, and you’ll see, but I don’t think that there would be any problem.
Asalam Alaikum everyone,
Wow Mashallah, all these Greek Muslims! It si wonderful. I was born in Greece, Athens, but been in the US all my life, Wash DC area. I have been Muslim for almost 11 years, and I am proud to be Muslim. My family were hesitant at first to accept it, but now by the grace of Allah, they are ok.
Hayrullah, My dad is from Epirus, which part are u from? Do u live there now?

Let me start by saying that I am not a muslim but I am a student of islamic studies. I am currently in Crete studying abroad and was hoping to further my research by meeting any muslims on the island. Unfortunately they are hard to find. Can anyone help me? If you are a muslim living on the island of Crete or know any please contact me at E_jypt@yahoo.com. Thank you so much.
Assalam aleykum

Hi Evonne,
Thanks for posting here. I don’t know any Greeks from Crete myself but if you have questions about Islam, you can email me at info@greekmuslims.com. If you specifically want to connect with someone in Crete, perhaps Br. Amir (#52), IslamGreece (#39) or Ahmet (#25) can help you find some. Also, if you really wanted, you can trying contacting the Mufti offices in Komotoni and see if they have and contacts there.
But yeah, email me if you need anything. I’m curious about how a person is not Muslim but a student of Islamic studies at the same time. 🙂
salam alaikom
you can see the new website islam.gr,

Wa alaikum assalaam all. Welcome to the website islam.gr and Ramil. Ma sha Allah very nice to see others in Greece or going to Greece.
Islam.gr, I included your website in our links section. Ma sha Allah, I like how you started the English section.
Ramil, you can read some of the previous posts but perhaps you can contact either Amir, Ahmed or IslamGreece to get some more direct information.
Again, welcome to our website!
Hello everybody, I’m a Greek Orthodox Christian, and I wanna ask you, why do you think you’re different? I think we all are the same we are all humans and Greeks, and we’re not supposed to count each other different, I was shocked to see Greek Muslims think they are not Greeks or make their own websites as if they were different, I’ll tell ya, we’re all Greeks, athiests, Jews, Musilms or Christians, the most important thing to believe in Allah only! I speak Arabic very fluently, for Muslims who want help in this language, and I know a lot about Islam, so anyone needs help, I’m here : mesow@hotmail.com.
Welcome to the website, Mesow. I’ve replied to your answer on the main page at this post: https://greekmuslim.wordpress.com/2008/07/26/qa-why-do-you-think-you-are-different/
Looking forward to hearing your answer, God willing.
As’salam Alaykom everyone. It is so nice to have found this website and to know that there are so many greek persons who are muslims. I am greek muslim for three years as of November and my children Alhamdulillah followed after me. I live in Maryland. My father, sister’s and brothers want nothing to do with me since i became muslim but i would not go back to the life i lived before, not even for them. My new family are my muslim brothers and sisters and whenever i meet a muslim i feel so warm with them and i love them better than my own blood family. May Allah open there eyes to the truth… the way of life… ISLAM.
Aristea, Asalamu Alejkum. I am currently living in USA. I am from a very small village called Neohori (old name Yenikoy) right about in the middle between Janina, Arta and Karbenisi. It is high on the banks of Aspropotamos. We migrated there originally from Laka Suli. Where in Epirus are you descended from?
Al salam alaikom,
Wa alaikum assalaam Jalilah and Anna!! Welcome, both of you, to the group. I am so very happy to see more and more Greek Muslims! It’s a true blessing from Allah.
Jalilah, I heard that Maryland is an awesome community – lots of stuff going on there. 🙂
Anna, may Allah reward you for all of the great work you are doing with the website. It looks very nice ma sha Allah and it has some unique information. Keep up the good work!
I look forward to hearing from both of you in the future. You can check out our articles and discussions and post comments there.

Assalamu alaikum
I was born and raised in Melbourne Australia. Both my parents migrated from Greece in the 1970’s. First and foresmost I am a Muslim, being Greek just happened & was something I couldn’t control. Alhumdullilah I am not ashamed of my Greek Heritage, Greeks have contributed so much to civilisation.
And to Mesow, we are not all the same, you should know that. As Muslims we worship the Almighty in his Divine Unity, declare the messengership of Nabi Mohammed, pray, fast, give charity and go for Hajj.
I haven’t been to Greece since I was 2 years old but maybe one day Allah the almighty will allow me to visit all my brothers and sisters in Greece. When I was in Hajj in 2006/07 I attempted to find Greek Muslims but had no such luck, alhumdulliah I have found them now online.
Wa alaikum assalaam Abu Abdullah.
Ma sha Allah, welcome to the group! I think you are our first Greek Muslim from Australia. I did come across this website http://www.greek-muslims.com a couple of days ago that is put on by Australian Muslims but their e-mail address is bouncing.
I know this is a long shot, but I wonder if you know of them or their “Greek Muslims Network”. They said their family is now Greek and there is a story about another Greek Muslim sister on the website too.
Anyhow, welcome, and you can cruise the site for our articles, videos etc. and feel free to post comments.
Assalamu alaikum greekmuslim,
The website that you are referred http://www.greek-muslims.com appears to be based in the UK as they had a UK telephone number. After a very poor attempt to read the website in Greek, I found that the sister being interviewed is from Darwin. Let me put this into perspective, Darwin is a small city of 100,000 people, however it does have a sizable Greek community and actually has a Greek language program at the local University. Darwin is over a four hour flight away from Melbourne, approximately the distance from Athens to Belfast. I was last there in 2006, they only have one masjid, which is frequented by mainly Indian/Bengalis/Pakistanis and Indoneasians. I found no eveidence of a Greek-Australians Muslims Association. However a few years back I did see this same group being listed on some Website. It appears to be an old organisation that has most likely disbanded. I’m not too sure if there are enough Greek Muslims to form an association.
However, a couple of years back my wife was asked by a friend of hers for my Greek translation of the Qu’ran as there was a Greek sister in Melbourne who was married to an Arab man who wanted one and I was porbably the only person in the country with a Greek translation. I do not know what happened to her.
I better get back to work now. Anyway check this out http://www.muslimsinaustralia.com/mina/ and guess which one is the Greek muslim (me) in the 1st video.

I hope to hear from you in the future, posting comments and such.
(Br. Abdullah, jazak Allah khair for the thorough explanation about the Australia website. It clears things up.)
Asbolute pleasure greekmuslim (I’m not sure if you are a brother or a sister). It was such a struggle trying to read that Website in Greek, I regret not continuing my studies in the Greek language, I can barely read a newspaper. When I go to my parents house and watch the News from Greece I have absolutely no idea what the news presenter is talking about.
Welcome to Samira
Salam aleikom pedia.! mashallah it is amazing to see such an increase in the group’s members, and wonderful to see the discussion going on! Welcome back, Mariam. We missed you and your posts. 🙂
Assalamu Alaikum everyone!
I’m really excited to meet other Greek Muslims. I’m Helen from North London and I would love to meet Greek Muslims and share our experiences together. If any of you are in England I would to hear from you, we need to support one another InshAllah. My email is Muslimah@live.co.uk
My family are beginning to understand that being muslim is MY CHOICE but the hardest times are things like Christmas. I have a really big family and at the centre of it all are my grandparents, everyone is scared of upsetting them like they are the mafia. They are old and not of best health so yes they do play the guilt trip on me like in (My big fat Greek wedding) if any of you have seen it. But I just want to say that it takes time, yes I did feel at times that I was killing my grandparents which is a scary thought, and I couldn’t explain it to them without them getting angry. It does get easier. The best advise I would say is to take things slow (I rushed it all a bit the beginning) and even though we are all Greek, each family is still different and you have to judge how much more you can assert your beliefs. Rome was not built in a day and most importantly the Quran wasn’t revealed in a day. Everyone needs time to adjust to changes to have a solid foundation beneath.
To all those who are worried about telling your family, the best thing is to strengthen yourself first. You will eventually find that one day, you will be so fed up with pleasing everyone else that you will start to become more assertive about your beliefs, and the more knowledge you have the more confident you will be about giving Dawah. people will respect the effort you made with your research. Just recently my uncle actually told me that he was proud of me for standing by my beliefs and facing up to everyone, which was a shock to hear. It made me realise though that being convinced and strong will eventually earn y respect from some of your family which is heart warming. If you want to give Dawah start watching others who give dawah, I have peace Tv and Zakir naik really helped me to pretty much have an answer to everything they may ask. People tend to ask the same questions so you just need to take that first step. Practice with a friend first.
My email is Muslimah@live.co.uk

Wa alaikum assalaam Helen.
Wow, ma sha Allah excellent advice! I think this is one of the best lessons I’ve learned when dealing with family. Actions speak louder than words.
It so nice to meet all of these Greek Muslims from around the world, ma sha Allah and I think there are some others in the UK. Wouldn’t it be cool for you guys to meet?
Jalilah,
I am so happy that there is a Greek Muslim in my area. I live in Virginia, and I would love to get together with you. My email address is isha_rashad786@yahoo.com
Hayrullah,
My father is from Kavallari, a small village close to Yannina.
Asalamualaikum,
I am not Greek, but I just wanted to say that it’s really good to know you can really find Muslims in ever corner of the world. Is there a Mosque in Greece? I couldn’t find anything that said there actually is. How is muslim life for those of you who live in Greece?
Sincerely,
A Muslim Sister
Wa alaikum assalaam Dewa,
Welcome to the website. Subhan Allah, yeah, isn’t it amazing that Muslims are in all parts of the world? I just found out recently that there are Muslims even in the Island of Fiji!
I am not in Greece but from what the Muslims in Greece tell me, they are in the process of finalizing the mosque in Athens after years of delay (apparently Greece was the only country in the EU that did not have a mosque in its capital city).
Seems like there has been an influx of Muslim immigrants to Greece in recent years which is making Islam more noticeable in Greece now.
Perhaps someone living in Greece can elaborate more.
Thanks for visiting the site and hope to hear from you again.
SubhanAllah! Aristea, you are a Muslima from Zagori 🙂 SubhanAllah! I am very happy to be your brother in Islam!
Yes, Alhumduillah, so where do u live in the US?
I am in North carolina.
hello everybody… i am a part of the greek muslim community in lebanon.. tripoli for exact… in here we are known only as greeks.. or cretes.. often pronounced “kurds” :S… so i would like to say hello to everybody… the younger generation in tripoli couldn’t learn greek from their parents because our grandfathers kept it for themselves… we would like to have a way to re-learn greek language if anyone can help us..
salam…
Cool, Hayrullah,
We are kind of close I am in Va, here is my email address
isha_rashad786@yahoo.com. Drop by a line.
Greek Muslim in Lebanon?! Cool, ma sha Allah. I would have never guessed it. Approximately, how many are there in your area or in Lebanon?
About the resources for learning Greek, I’ll try to post some up on the main page soon.
Aristea, I used to live in Fairfax/Falls Church, VA. We used to go to Dar ul-Hijra masjid. I actually lived right beside it. Do you know where is that?
Yes of course I know where that is. I lived close to it also. I live alittle further now. Oh thats nice, so what made you move to NC?
I moved to NC because many relatives of mine were there.
Assalamu aliakum to everybody.
Now greekmuslim, in response to you being surprised about muslims in Fiji, allow me to shed some light as Fiji is just on my doorstep as I come from downunder (as opposed to Europe or the US).
Alhumdulillah muslims make up approx 10% of the entire population of Fiji, which is approx 75,000. Ther majority of Muslims originated from the Indian subcontinent and were brought over as indentured labourers by non other than the Bristish Colonial Powers of the time. The Majority of Muslims in fiji are Sunnis Alhumdulillah with small Ahmadiya minority who are out of the fold and shouldn’t even get a mention. From what I hear, Muslims in Fiji are very successful in commerce.
Due to success of the Indians in Fiji (who constitute approx 40% of the total population), there have been two military coup d’état by indigenous Fijians in the past two decades after an Indian led party had been elected to power. This caused many Fijian Indians to leave the country and to seek refuge in countries such as Australia & New Zealand. I must say that my first dealings with Muslims in my adult life was with Fijians. They are a very well organised religious community and they are just about to complete building a masjid close by in downtown Melbourne.
asalamu alaykum,
i am greek girl….just b4 2 hours i have accepted islam and am so happy for tht….my name is iman now…

Salam alykom w rahmatullah w baraqatu!
i was really interested to know if anyone knows a greek sheikh, someone who would be willing to relocate to cyprus or to greece even , for the sake of allah, to teach islam and run the mosque, in the language that it should be done in the country that it is in. we usualy have arab sheikhs in cyprus , im not too sure about greece, but i think its about time we began our own path people. we need a greek native/ or cypriot native, who is a sheikh and speaks arabic too, who is shariah qualified inshallah, please contact me on (maryam–k@hotmail.com)

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatu Mariam,
I have no idea if there is such a thing.. anyone in Greece know? I do know however that many men from around the world go to study at the University of Madinah and then go back to reside in their own countries as shyookh. That way it is so much better because the shaykh needs to understand the people, the land and the culture of that land.
For example, one of the shaykhs I studied under was Vietnamese who graduated from the University of Madinah. He told us some crazy stories of the culture of Vietnamese Muslims in Vietnam and Cambodia… if they were to have an Arab shaykh, man things would have definitely been chaotic. For example, in their culture, it is a big shame for men to ask women for their hand in marriage. In their culture, the women do the asking. Plus there were lots of other cultural things involved…
Does anyone know of Greek shuyookh?
Asalamu alaykum,
I am a greek muslim from toronto, now living in england!
It is so good to see so many stories, so many greeks embracing Islam.
I am muslim now for 22 years.
My husband is also a greek muslim almost almost for 40 years now and he is what you call a Greeuk shuyook!
Needless to say I feel very blessed to be his wife because until I met him I was always confused on many so called ‘islamic’ issues.
Let’s all keep talking and supporting each other insha’allah!
Salam
Just to clarify my email, coz i think it doesnt show that it is 2 dashes , as in – – next to each other, and not one dash, and it is not an underscore:)
i always have this prob with my email, think i need to change it …lol:)
the funny thing is, speaking of the cyprus mosque, is that aside from having arab sheikhs, the reps of the mosque keep arguing between them, and we end up having different sheikhs every 2 weeks. the other month, i heard that the arab palestinians and jordanians came down with knives to try and put their point across better to the egyptians, who were running the mosque at the time….and none of the sheikhs speak greek….and barely english….so in other words our khutbas are in arabic, and all the greeks either sit there like lemons, or we sit next to an arab speaker and they explain wat is goin on…..
thereforeeee…rather than having these problems, could we work together to find ourselves a local greek or cypriot sheikh coz it is kind of crucial.

Assalam-o-Alaikum ,
Dear borthers and sisters,
first of all congratulations for this so nice place to exchange the ideas and views among the Greek Muslims and Muslims anywhere in the world.
I am Pakistani national living here in Kos Island, GR for more than ten years. There are three mosques here in Kos Island and a large number of Muslims living here, mostly they speak Turkish language to each other.
Kos is only about 5km from the Turkish west coast and the nearest cities are Turgutreis and Bodrum.
Wa alaikum assalaam Br. Khizar. Wow, ma sha Allah another place in Greece where there are Muslims! I wonder if Kos Island is close to Samos…
Welcome to the group. You can read our articles on the main page. Look forward to hearing from you in the future insha Allah.
Congratulations for this site guys!
I’m not muslim, but i’m happy to see that Greek muslims take a step and create a website about them. Religion should not be an obstacle for the Greeks whether they are christian, muslims, pagans or whatever. Greeks should not have religious boundaries. Keep up brothers!
Salam Alaykoum

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakato Penelopi,
Welcome to our site. You are the first Greek Muslim I know from New York. 🙂 About your other comment, alhamdulillah we, on the site here, identify ourselves as Muslims as Allah has given us this name. We do agree with and respect “ahlul bayt” of prophet Muhammad (saws) in the same way the prophet (saws) did and the sahaba did and we do not take it further than that or less than that.
This is the same for any concept in Islam (the middle path). We strive to practise it from what we know from the authentic traditions as the Prophet Muhammad (saws) practices it. We love Allah, the prophet Muhammad (saws), his family, his wives, all of the sahaba (as mentioned in the Quran that Allah is pleased with them) and the entire Muslim ummah.
Thanks for visiting our website.
alaikum salam greekmuslim,
Im glad you love the prophet and the family of the prophet, truly this is something shared between all muslims. It may be true that I love them a little too intensely. I cannot see how I cannot, their life, their teachings, their immense knowledge the miracles that have happened to them have really touched my heart and made me real proud to be a muslim. I guess if this is a sin may allah (SWT) show mercy on me.
Its true we should love all muslims, and all humanity in general too. We cannot forget the teaching of prophet Esa (AS) either, who told us to love even our enemies.

My appologies for not introducing myself to everyone on this page earlier.

I love everyone of my fellow Muslims, but there’s almost this double respect to the Greeks who convert to Islam, because out of all cultures who convert into the religion; Greeks would be the most challenging. Being a Greek Muslim, not only makes you a minority in the Greek world, but also in the Islamic. Props to all of you and may Allah continue guiding us. Amin.

My name is Yota and I have been muslim for a year and three days 🙂 I also thought I was the only one in the world… I even thought I would start a revolution and my grandchildren could inshallah say that their grandmother was one of the first…
I live in PA and my family is from Thessaloniki.
I would be very happy to speak to anyone interested in talking to me.
I can be reached at: pxv121@psu.edu

See you there insha Allah.
The values of Islam and Greek Culture are not compatible. The ancient Greeks were proud people and even swore at their ‘gods’ when things were going wrong. Greece is the birthplace of democracy and freedom, Islam preaches Medieval stuff.

Not Greek but an Australian Muslim…
Some advice for converts….
*There will be spiritual highs and lows that are part of the journey – observe the religion not based on emotion or sentiment but on submission to your Creator
*If you sin don’t despair – feel the moral deficit – but have faith that forgiveness can only be granted by Allah, not through any other entity
*If your lifestyle isn’t conducive to Islamic teachings be patient – when Allah opens a way for Hijrah (migration, in its broadest sense not neccessarily literal) have the courage to take it.
*Observe the commandments of Islam between two qualities HOPE and FEAR – hope in Allah’s mercy and fear of Allah’s wrath, by doing so you will find BALANCE
* Do not suppress your culture, only those aspects which are contrary to devine commandments
Most importantly…
Ask Allah for guidance…
Guidance from disbelief to Islam is one thing but guidance from being a nominal Muslim to a true slave of Allah is another…

You guys are nuts. We all know we come from Apes anyways. You guys go to school too. You should know any better than become Muslims after what all those Muslims did. They only convert you so you can join the terrorist ranks. Have you ever opened the Bible??? After seeing what is going in Greece, I can only argue being Greek myself, would you ever stand up for war against the Turks or Slavo-Macedonians if it ever happens??? You burn the streets of Athens too. Shame on you, the Greek youth.

Dear Muslims,
Why u do not show us ur real face and how we arab Christans are humiliated in the Moslem countries. U are proud to show converts into isalm but have u forgotten those who left islam and acc to ur books one who leaves islam his blood ”yanhader”.
U are a religion of war and terror !!! here u are under the
trojan horse in disguise trying to fool the Greek Chrstians,
who think it is a fashion to become a muslim.
Ur religion calls for the destruction of others, go and see how we are treated in Saudi Arabia and the like. At least the Shia’ are more liberals than u are.
Christians in the Arab and Pakistan as well as Afghanistan are beeing erased… and u have the guts to make a lik here ??
This is what Islam is :
it is in Arabic subtitled in English…..
Hyppocites !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was not allowed to carry my bible in the airport of Saudia it was taken from my bags…

Who said the new testament was in greek originally? Do you really actually believe that lie? Esa alaihe salam was hebrew, not greek and the real new testament came from him.
For Ibn Ghassan
About the video up above. This woman calls terrorists muslims and that’s why she is arguing so hard. Muslims don’t do all of those bad things either. Crazy people and terrorists who call themselves muslims do those things. A muslim is literally, one who submits to the will of Allah. Allah and his prophet, sallalahu alaihe wa salam did not say to always fight people until they believe. People forget or are ignorant, or keep shayton to close to them to remember and know that when the quran was revealed, Allah was addressing issues of the past, the present and the future. At that time the non-muslims were fighting the muslims and killing them simply for believing in Islam and teaching it. So they were told that they could fight them. That doesn’t mean at any time if you see a non-muslim, especially a peaceful one, that you try to kill them or fight them. You and any one who speaks like you, were never really muslim as evidenced by your lack of knowledge and understanding about Islam so you people who talk like this were never muslim and then left the religion. You never knew the truth to be a muslim and then never cared to learn the truth so Allah has allowed you to go astray so you can spend eternity with your friend Shayton9Mans avowed enemy).
Asalam Alaikum how is everybody? Ahmed your story sounded pretty sad, I am sorry, but you can not blame anyone. Everyone has their own mind to make their own choices.

I am not greek but I am Muslim Alhamdulillah…I ‘ve looking to find a greek Muslim website for a while and finaly came across this site as well as greeksrethink.com.
I want to get to know greek muslims better especially greek converts who converted from the greek orthodox faith. I would really love to know how you came to Islam, I know that it is very hard to convert in greek culture especially if you are greek orthodox and family orientated (someone who is greek told me that greek orthodox families are very close knit and strict).
Insha-Allah by hearing more about what inspired you to accept Islam it will give me the courage to talk to a greek man I know and really love about Islam and Insha-Allah also accepting Islam.
and Alhamdulillah it’s so nice to see that there so many Greek Muslims from around the world.
Asalaam Everyone!!
I am not greek, however i have lived pretty much every where… from Sweden to Japan to America, Canada.. and now im in the UK. About three years ago I met a Greek girl at university and since then i have been interested in Greek culture people, lifestyle. I am muslim, Allahamdulillah, and am very intrigued by how many Greek muslims there are. I actually just came back form vacation in Greece (at my friends house) and there i saw no muslims, and thought maybe there isn’t much of a community there. But i am glad to know now that I was wrong, Allahamdulillah :o)
I would love to chat and talk to you guys about how you converted, what your thoughts about Islam are, how living in greece with its strong cultures and traditions has effected your belief in Islam.
Hope to hear form someone soon inshAllah!!

I like to know about muslims in Greek, I am a new muslim, and I like to have a place to bring “Halal” meat.

Alsalamaleikum all brothers, sisters sons and daughters in Islam. My reentry to Islam,as everybody is born a Muslim and then his parents change him,was in 1974 in Sudan where I was brought up in a greek orthodox family. What made me convert was the question in religion class “what should a good Christian do?” and when I replied that I’m not a good Christian hell’s doors opened and didn’t close firstly because I was in the last class of Secondary and three months away from graduation my exam papers were lost subhan Allah mysteriously, At the greek community club my friends and classmates were looking at me as if I came from another planet The bookshop owner who was so happy to commend any new books that came from Greece stopped result I migrated after getting married to a Pious Sudanese man with whom I lived 34 years and who taught me everything there is to know about Islam and passed away last year. What i read about your comments expresses all the fears questions relationships that I experienced and just want to tell you that what we have done by reentering our original religion is the best we have done for ourselves and may Allah protect us from the evils of life. Please keep up your comments intoductions which keepme company and help me be a better Muslim. Al sallam aleikum

Assalamwaalaikum,
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Islam, i am luking for a simple/religious/pious girl to do nikkah (islamic marriage) with. I am an Austn.Citzn and luking for someone in Australia of any nationality. I came across this site by accident. (i suppose it was written by Allah(swt). I am 30yrs old (look much younger), thin built, born in Australia, Fiji-Indian background. I would like someone who has an interest/ wants to learn about Islam or who is religious/ fears Allah(swt) and tries her best to follow the sunnah of the Prophet(saw). I am div. and have one child – basically, i just want a good / religious person. I would really like to have more children to. I am not from a religious family, though trying to make effort. I am practising muslim: pray 5times, fast etc, have sunnah beard etc and want to live a peaceful and happy life, practicing the deen of Allah(swt). I would like to complete the other half of my iman by doing nikkah with the suitable match, and making our iman more stronger. I would be greatful for any of ur replies / and / or if u know anyone. JazakAllah Kheir. May Allah(swt) bless u all.

I am of greek decent living Canada. I have been converted to Islam for 6 years now and alhamdoullilah. I have found great strength and support from God in my conversion. I am a very Greek person, proud of being Greek. I often visit my homeland and love our traditions. I am also very proud of being a muslam and thank Allah every day in my prayers. I am here looking for people with similar situations and maybe we can exchange our stories and become friends as sometimes we need to surround ourselves with people that understand what we are going through. Although I am very strong in my faith, I am still finding problems with my parents and family and getting their understanding. I am looking forward to hearing from you.
May Allah keep you strong in your faith.

w ailaikum salam Yasmine,
I just stumbled upon this website and am so suprised to see so many Greek reverts to islam. I reverted to islam 3 years ago before I married a muslim man and am in Australia. I am proud to be Greek and I find great peace in finally finding Islam. It is a shame that the Greek people I am surrounded by are totally against islam – both family and friends. It can be very difficult however I find strength in knowing that at the time of the prohet (swt) the same difficulties were faced.
Salam Yasmine
I am in Toronto, Canada.
I am doing one project, translating the Last Sermon of our beloved Prophet Mohammed SAW peace be upon him in all world’s languages. Therefore I need your help to translate in Greek language. Hope you will help me.

Attention to: Brother / Sister owner of this homepage’s
Selamun Aleykum Dear my brother/sister of this homepage’s owner, First of all, as one of your muslim brother, who is from Turkey, I am proud of you owing your Dawa, and i should say that ” May Allah eliminate you”, this sentence is not correct about a nation ” We are not Turks pretending to be Greeks!!!”, how you can classify a whole nation on a so easy phrase ? As a muslim person, do you find it correct ? I guess, you got some disappointment with a few turkish fellows, hence of this reason , you are so angry. lets say and accept that you had a bad relation with a few turkish guys in past, but you should not type like above sentence, because it is your private problem, then what should you have done, at least you could do a ” DUA “, not talk behind the people. Hence of this reason, my dear brother, we must be careful on what we talk about, isnt it?
InsaAllah, I didnt disturb you explain this subject.
Jazakallahu Hayran my beloved ahi,

Please can someone advise me the best places to stay which are close to the masjids and halaal food outlets but also not too far out from the holiday adventures.
I can be emailed at ahmed@akhonafurn.co.za
Jazaka Allah in advance for the help.

Hi ,
My mother is from Greece I wish she converts to Islam. The problem is hat she don’t know about Islam or Christianity . But because she is from Greece she think as everyone there that Jesus is. Greek , so it’s very difficult to convence her.
I really need someone to put something from the bible to show it to her .
Thanks and may Allah bless you all.
